Working in the trades is often hard, physically demanding work, and women are held to the same standards as men. To help them learn the skills they'll need on the job site and prepare for a career in a male-dominated industry, an increasing number of colleges are offering free or low-cost apprentice training programs geared specifically to women. Career choices for women aren't as limited as they were a few short decades ago, but there are still a few areas where women are seldom seen. Many of those are in the skilled and construction trades, where woman often form 3 percent of the workforce or less according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Women's Bureau.
